    How to roll virtual dice

    1. Set the number of dice

      Pick 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10 dice from the first menu.

    2. Choose the type of die

      Leave it on d6 for ordinary board-game dice, or switch to d4, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100 for tabletop role-playing games.

    3. Roll and read the total

Press Roll. Six-sided dice show pips; other dice show the number. With more than one die, the total appears underneath and the history records each roll as, for example, 3+5=8.

Which dice can I roll here?

All seven of the common gaming dice: the four-sided d4, the ordinary d6, and the d8, d10, d12, d20 and d100. That covers a standard role-playing set plus percentile rolls. You can roll up to ten dice of one type per throw, and the Rolls counter tells you how many throws you have made this session.

Each throw uses one die type. If your game asks for mixed dice, such as 1d8 plus 1d6, roll each type separately and add the two totals yourself.

    Rolling dice for tabletop RPGs

Games such as Dungeons & Dragons use the d20 for most checks and attacks, and smaller dice for damage. A few tips for using this roller at the table:

    • Advantage and disadvantage. Set 2 dice and d20. Both results are shown side by side, so take the higher or the lower as the rules say.
    • Damage rolls. Choose, for example, 3 dice and d6 for 3d6, and the total is ready to read out.
    • Percentile rolls. Physical sets use two ten-sided dice for this. The d100 option gives you a number from 1 to 100 in a single roll.
    • Rolling in the open. Share your screen or keep the history visible so the table can see each result as it lands.

What is the most likely total with two dice?

Seven. With two six-sided dice there are 36 equally likely combinations, and six of them add up to 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2 and 6+1). That gives 7 a chance of 6 in 36, or 1 in 6. The extremes are rare: a 2 or a 12 can each happen only one way, so each has a 1 in 36 chance.

    Total (2d6)Ways to roll itChance
    2 or 121 each1 in 36 each
    3 or 112 each2 in 36 each
    4 or 103 each3 in 36 each
    5 or 94 each4 in 36 each
    6 or 85 each5 in 36 each
    766 in 36 (1 in 6)

This curve is why many board games built on two dice treat 7 as special: it is the number you will see most often. A single die is different. Every face from 1 to 6 is equally likely, so a d6 on its own is flat, and a number wheel from 1 to 10 is a better fit when you need a flat spread over a different range.

Lost the dice from a board game?

It happens to every family game box. Put this page on a phone in the middle of the table and set the number of dice the game needs: two d6 for most classic board games, or five d6 for games where you roll a handful. There is no way to hold some dice and re-roll the rest, so when a game lets you keep dice, set the count to the number you are re-rolling and add the kept ones yourself.

If your game also needs someone to start, use the who goes first wheel, or flip for it with the coin toss when there are only two players.

    Dice or random number generator?

Dice are best for game rules written in dice terms, like 2d6 or 1d20. If you need a number from an unusual range, such as 1 to 37, or many numbers with no repeats, the random number generator does that directly.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are these virtual dice fair?

Yes. Each die is rolled independently, and every face has the same chance: 1 in 6 on a d6, 1 in 20 on a d20 and so on. Previous rolls have no effect on the next one.

How many dice can I roll at once?

Up to ten dice per throw. Choose 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10 from the Number of dice menu. With more than one die, the page adds up the total for you.

    Can I roll a d20 for Dungeons & Dragons?

Yes. Choose d20 in the Sides menu. For advantage or disadvantage, roll two d20 at once and take the higher or lower of the two faces shown. For damage, switch to the die your weapon or spell uses.

Why does 7 come up so often with two dice?

Because more combinations add up to 7 than to any other total. Six of the 36 possible pairs make 7, so it appears about once every six rolls, while 2 and 12 appear about once every 36.

Can I see my previous rolls?

Yes. Your recent rolls are listed under the dice, newest first, with multi-dice rolls written out like 4+2+6=12. The list keeps the last 24 rolls and clears when you reload the page.
