Yes or no wheel

Ask your question out loud, press Spin, and the wheel answers yes or no. Both answers have exactly a 50% chance. Add “Maybe” or “Ask again” if you want a way out, or weight the wheel when you want a nudge rather than a coin toss.

How to use the yes or no wheel

  1. Ask one clear question

Phrase it so that yes and no both make sense: “Should I go to the gym tonight?” works; “Gym or pool?” belongs on a this or that wheel.

  2. Spin

Press Spin or click the wheel. It spins for a few seconds and stops on Yes or No.

  3. Check your reaction

Relieved or disappointed? That feeling is often the real answer. Spin again if you want best of three.

How does a yes or no wheel work?

The wheel has two equal slices, one for yes and one for no. When you press Spin, SpinDecide picks one of them with your browser's cryptographic random generator and then animates the wheel to land on it. Because the slices are the same size, each answer has a 1 in 2 chance on every spin, and earlier spins have no effect on the next one.

That makes it exactly as fair as tossing a coin, with two practical advantages. Nobody has to remember which side meant yes, and you can add a third or fourth answer without changing tools.

Yes, no or maybe: which version should you use?

The plain two-slice wheel is best when you genuinely need to commit, for example when two friends cannot agree whether to go out. Adding Maybe gives each answer a one-in-three chance and is good for lighter questions and party games. The yes, no, maybe wheel is already set up that way.

Some people add Ask again as a slice, which works like a “reply hazy” answer on a magic 8-ball: it adds suspense without changing the balance between yes and no. If you like that style, try the magic 8-ball, which has the twenty classic answers.

Can I make yes more likely than no?

Yes. Open Settings, tick Use weights, and give Yes a weight of 2 and No a weight of 1. The Yes slice doubles in size and wins about two spins in three. This is useful when you have mostly decided but want a little chance involved, such as “I will probably order takeaway, unless the wheel says otherwise.”

Keep in mind that a weighted wheel is no longer a fair coin. If other people are relying on the result, say so before you spin, or leave the weights off.

Good questions for a yes or no wheel

The wheel shines on decisions that are low-stakes, reversible and stuck. Some examples people spin every day:

  • Should I order dessert?
  • Do we watch one more episode?
  • Should I text them first?
  • Is it a pizza night?
  • Should I wear the bold outfit?
  • Do we take the scenic route?

For party games and icebreakers, our list of 100 yes or no questions is sorted by audience, from kids to coworkers.

When not to use a yes or no wheel

A random answer is a fine way to break a tie between two acceptable options. It is not a way to make decisions about health, money, safety or other people's wellbeing. If the question matters, use the wheel for what it is secretly good at: showing you which answer you were hoping for, then making that decision yourself.

Yes or no wheel vs coin flip

A two-slice wheel and a fair coin give identical odds. Choose the coin flip if you want heads and tails, running stats and streaks. Choose the wheel if you want the words Yes and No on screen, a result you can share with a link, or the option to add more answers later.

Frequently asked questions

Is the yes or no wheel 50/50?

Yes. The two slices are exactly the same size and the winner is chosen by a cryptographic random generator, so Yes and No each have a 50% chance on every spin. Previous results do not affect the next spin.

How do I add Maybe to the wheel?

Type Maybe in the box beside the wheel and press Enter. Each of the three answers then has a one-in-three chance. You can also open the ready-made yes, no, maybe wheel.

Can I change the odds?

Yes. Turn on “Use weights” in Settings and give one answer a bigger weight. A weight of 2 against 1 makes that slice twice as large and twice as likely to win.

Can I share my yes or no wheel?

Press “Share or embed” under the wheel to copy a link. Anyone who opens it sees the same wheel, with your colours and any extra answers you added.

Does the wheel work offline or on a phone?

It works on any modern phone, tablet or computer. Once the page has loaded, spins happen entirely in your browser, so a weak connection does not slow them down.
