What to eat wheel

When nobody can decide what to eat, spin this wheel of cuisines and meal types: Italian, Thai, tacos, a big salad, breakfast for dinner and more. It answers the question at the level of “what kind of food”, so it works whether you cook, order in or go out.

How to decide what to eat with the wheel

  1. Trim the wheel

Delete anything nobody fancies today, or anything you ate yesterday, with the cross beside it.

  2. Agree the veto rule

Before spinning, agree that each person may veto one result. After that, the wheel’s answer stands.

  3. Spin and commit

Press Spin and go with the cuisine it lands on. Then choose a dish, recipe or place within it.

Why is deciding what to eat so hard?

Because the question is too open. “What do you want?” invites a hundred possibilities, and “I don’t mind” sends it straight back. A wheel narrows it to one broad answer, such as Thai or soup, and a narrower question is much easier to finish. Once the cuisine is settled, picking a dish usually takes seconds.

There is a small psychological bonus too. When the wheel lands, notice your first reaction. A groan at “Greek” tells you more about what you want tonight than ten minutes of discussion would. We explore this in why letting a wheel decide can be the smart choice.

How do I make the wheel fit my household?

Start by deleting what does not apply. If nobody in the house eats spicy food, take out curry; if you are vegetarian, the barbecue slice can become “Veggie grill”. Then add what you actually rotate between. The quickest way is Edit as text: type one option per line, and the wheel redraws when you switch back.

Your version is saved in this browser automatically, so next time the page opens with your own options rather than ours. Reset to default in Settings brings back the original list.

Can I make our favourites come up more often?

Yes. Tick Use weights in Settings and give your go-to cuisines a weight of 2 or 3. Their slices grow, and they win more often, while the adventurous options still get the occasional turn. It is a useful balance for families with a picky eater: the familiar meals dominate, but the wheel still pushes you to try something new now and then.

Cook, order or go out?

This wheel settles the kind of food, not where it comes from. If you are cooking, the dinner wheel lists specific home-cooked meals, and our list of dinner ideas has dozens more to add. If you are heading out, the restaurant picker is designed to hold your own local favourites. For the midday version of the same problem, try the lunch wheel.

Some groups spin twice: first on a this or that wheel with “Cook” and “Order in”, then on this one.

Deciding what to eat with friends

When the debate is happening in a group chat, press Share or embed and send the link. Everyone opens the same wheel with the same options, and the host can spin with the group on a video call. Settle the veto rule first, then leave the result alone: re-spinning until one person gets their way defeats the point.

Frequently asked questions

What if we don’t like what the wheel picks?

Agree a veto rule before you spin, such as one veto per person. If you veto, press Remove it and spin again so the rejected option leaves the wheel. After the vetoes are used, commit to the result.

Can I add specific dishes instead of cuisines?

Yes. Type any dish into the box and press Enter, or paste a list with Edit as text. If you mostly want specific home-cooked meals, the dinner wheel already starts with twenty of them.

Will the wheel remember my changes?

Yes. Your options, colours and settings are saved in this browser on this device. To use the same wheel on another phone or share it with your partner, press Share or embed and send the link.

How do I avoid eating the same thing every week?

Delete the cuisines you have had recently before spinning, or give them a lower weight. Adding one new option each week, from a cookbook or a takeaway menu, also keeps the wheel fresh.

Can I use it for a family with different diets?

Yes. Edit the slices so every option works for everyone, for example “Veggie curry” or “Gluten-free pasta”. The wheel will then only ever pick meals the whole table can eat.
