How to play family-friendly spin the bottle

  1. Add the players

Sit in a circle and type everyone's name on the wheel. Put the phone or tablet in the middle.

  2. Agree the menu

Decide on a few questions and challenges in advance, and agree that anyone can pass.

  3. Spin

Tap the wheel. The player it lands on chooses a question or a challenge.

  4. Pass it on

The player who just took a turn does the next spin.

How is this version of spin the bottle played?

Instead of a real bottle pointing at someone, the wheel points at a player's name. That player picks between answering a question and doing a quick challenge, then spins for the next person. It keeps the suspense of the classic game and swaps everything else for laughter that suits mixed ages, from grandparents to young cousins.

There is no arguing about which way the bottle really pointed, and nobody's seat gives them an advantage. It also works when not everyone is in the same room, as long as the person spinning shares their screen on the video call.

Fun questions for the chosen player

  • What is the silliest thing you believed when you were little?
  • If you could have any animal as a pet, what would you pick?
  • Which food could you eat every day for a month?
  • What would you name your own island?
  • What is a skill you would love to learn?
  • Who in this room would survive longest on a desert island, and why?

For more, our icebreaker questions are sorted by group, and the truth or dare questions include plenty of kid-friendly ones.

Silly challenges for all ages

  • Talk like a pirate until your next turn.
  • Do your best impression of an animal and let everyone guess it.
  • Name five fruits in five seconds.
  • Balance a book on your head for ten seconds.
  • Tell your best (or worst) joke.
  • Give every player a genuine compliment.

Variations to keep the game going

Everyone gets a turn: tick Remove the winner after each spin in Settings, and each player is picked once before anyone is picked again. Reset to your saved list when the round ends.

Two-wheel version: keep this wheel for choosing the player and open the truth or dare wheel in a second tab to choose the type of turn. Each page remembers its own list, so neither wheel overwrites the other.

Classroom icebreaker: on the first day of term, put the class on the wheel and use get-to-know-you questions only. More group ideas are in spin the wheel party games.

How do we keep the game kind?

Agree before the first spin that anyone can pass without explanation. Skip challenges involving food (allergies are common), anything physically risky, and anything designed to embarrass someone. With younger children, an adult should run the wheel and approve the challenge list. And ask before filming anyone; a funny moment is only funny if the person in it agrees.

Frequently asked questions

Is this spin the bottle game suitable for children?

Yes. This version uses only friendly questions and harmless challenges, so it works for families, classrooms and kids' parties. An adult can check the list of challenges beforehand and keep a no-pressure pass rule.

How many players can join?

The wheel takes up to 200 names, but the game is most fun with about four to twelve players, so everyone gets a turn often. For bigger groups, split into smaller circles with the team picker wheel.

Can the same player be picked twice in a row?

Yes, because repeats are allowed on this page, just as a real bottle can point at the same person twice. Tick "Remove the winner after each spin" in Settings if you want everyone picked once per round.

Do we need a real bottle?

No. Put a phone, tablet or laptop in the middle of the circle and tap the wheel to spin. Full screen mode makes the names easy to read from across the room.

Can we play spin the bottle over a video call?

Yes. One person shares their screen and spins for the group, so everyone sees the same result. Sending the link to everyone would give each person their own separate wheel and different results.
