Hogwarts house wheel

Spin to be sorted into one of the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin, each in its house colour. It is a quick, light-hearted sorting game for themed birthday parties, reading clubs and classroom points systems. This is an unofficial fan tool.

What are the four Hogwarts houses?

In the stories, the school is divided into four houses, each named after one of its founders and linked to an animal, colours and a set of values. The wheel paints each slice in its house colour:

HouseColoursAnimalValues
GryffindorScarlet and goldLionCourage and daring
HufflepuffYellow and blackBadgerLoyalty, fairness and hard work
RavenclawBlue and bronzeEagleWit, curiosity and learning
SlytherinGreen and silverSerpentAmbition and resourcefulness

Ravenclaw’s colours are blue and bronze in the books; the films switched the bronze to silver.

How do I run a sorting game at a party?

Put the wheel on a TV or laptop in full screen, dim the lights a little, and call guests up one at a time to spin. The pause while the wheel slows down does the dramatic work for you. Have a coloured sticker, ribbon or name badge for each house ready, and hand it over as soon as the result pops up.

Want every house to end up the same size? Rather than spinning one by one, type the guests’ names into the team picker wheel and split them into four teams, or use the random team generator, then give each group a house. Spinning individually is more fun, but can give you seven Hufflepuffs and one Slytherin.

House points in the classroom

Many teachers run a reading-month or end-of-term house system. Each student spins once to join a house, and the class earns points for good work, kindness and teamwork. Keep a running tally on the board and let the leading house choose a reward on Friday; the classroom reward ideas list has plenty that cost nothing. Use the results history to note which house each student joined.

Keep the sorting light. Some children will be disappointed by their house, so it helps to say up front that every house has heroes, and let anyone who feels strongly swap once.

Other games with the house wheel

  • House quiz. Spin a house, and players name a character from it. Remove the house for the round once nobody can think of another.
  • Common room design. Spin a house and draw or describe what its common room might look like in your own home.
  • Team colours. For sports day or a treasure hunt, use the houses simply as four team names with ready-made colours.

Is the sorting random?

Yes. Each house has an equal one-in-four chance on every spin, and the wheel does not know anything about the person spinning; see is a spin wheel really random? for how the result is picked. If you want to nudge the result as a joke, say for a birthday child who is desperate for Gryffindor, turn on weights and make that slice bigger. Tell the guests, or not.

About this list

The wheel lists the four houses of Hogwarts as they appear in the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, with colours based on the book descriptions. Frequently asked questions

Is the Hogwarts house wheel random?

Yes. Each of the four houses has an equal 25% chance on every spin, and the result does not depend on who is spinning. It is a game of chance, not a personality test.

How do I make sure each house gets the same number of people?

Type the guests’ names into the team picker wheel or the random team generator and split them into four equal groups, then give each group a house. Spinning one by one can give uneven houses.

What colours are the Hogwarts houses?

Gryffindor is scarlet and gold, Hufflepuff yellow and black, Ravenclaw blue and bronze (blue and silver in the films) and Slytherin green and silver. The wheel paints each slice in its main colour.

Can I use the house wheel for classroom points?

Yes. Let each student spin once to join a house, note the results from the history, and award points through the term. Full screen mode works well on a classroom board.

Is this an official Harry Potter sorting tool?

No. It is an unofficial fan tool, not affiliated with Warner Bros., the author or the publishers. House names are used only to identify them in the game.
