Secret Santa wheel – draw names for your gift exchange

Put everyone's name on the wheel, then let each person spin in private to find out who they are buying for. Drawn names come off the wheel, so everyone receives exactly one gift. If someone lands on their own name, they put it back and spin again.

How to run a Secret Santa draw with the wheel

  1. Agree the rules

Settle the budget, the exchange date and any theme before anyone spins.

  2. Add every participant

Type each person's name on the wheel. Removal is already switched on for this page.

  3. Spin one at a time, in private

Hand the device over. Each person spins alone, remembers the name, closes the pop-up and presses Clear below the Results list before passing it on.

  4. Handle your own name

If you draw yourself, close the pop-up, type your name back into the box, press Enter and spin again.

How does a Secret Santa draw work on a spinning wheel?

The wheel replaces the hat full of paper slips; it is the same tool as our random name picker, set up for a private draw. Everyone's name goes on it, and people take turns to spin on the same phone, tablet or laptop, out of sight of the others. The name you land on is the person you buy for. Because removal is switched on, that name leaves the wheel when you close the result, so nobody can be drawn twice.

Two habits keep it secret. Clear the Results list before handing the device on, since it otherwise shows every earlier draw. And decide the spinning order before you start, perhaps with the who goes first wheel, so nobody can wait and try to steer who is left.

Before the first spin, copy a link from Share or embed. If the draw goes wrong, that link restores the full group so you can start again.

What if someone draws their own name?

The wheel cannot know who is holding the device, so it cannot stop you landing on yourself. The fix is the same as with a hat: put your name back and draw again. Close the pop-up, type your own name into the box beside the wheel, press Enter, then spin until you get someone else.

One awkward case can crop up. If the last person to spin finds that only their own name is left, there is nobody else to draw, so open the link you saved and redo the whole draw. The same put-it-back rule works if partners or housemates have agreed not to draw each other.

How much should a Secret Santa gift cost?

Agree a spending limit as a group and state it clearly, such as "around £15" or "no more than $20", so nobody feels awkward about spending too little or too much. Groups with mixed budgets often choose a lower limit and a playful theme: something handmade, a favourite book, a snack from your hometown, or a gift that begins with the first letter of the person's name.

Wish lists save a lot of guessing. Ask everyone to share two or three ideas in the group chat, or one thing they definitely do not want, without saying who they drew.

Can we do Secret Santa with a remote or virtual group?

Yes, but be clear about what the wheel does not do: it does not email or message anyone their match and it does not hide results from the person spinning. For a remote team, one organiser usually runs the draw alone. Spin once for each participant in a fixed order, and the copied Results list becomes the master list of who buys for whom. The organiser then messages each person privately. Tell the group that the organiser knows the pairings, or ask someone outside the exchange to run it.

Do not send the share link to everyone to spin on their own devices. Each copy of the wheel is independent, so two people could draw the same name while someone else is left out. For gifts sent by post, collect addresses privately and pick a date that allows for delivery, or agree on e-gift cards. For more ideas for the party itself, see our spin the wheel party games.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Secret Santa wheel email people their match?

No. The wheel runs entirely in your browser and has no email or messaging feature. Either everyone spins in private on one device, or an organiser runs the draw and sends each person their match privately.

Can the wheel stop people drawing themselves?

No, because it does not know who is spinning. Use the put-it-back rule: if you land on your own name, close the pop-up, type your name back in, press Enter and spin again.

How do we keep the draws secret on a shared phone?

After each person spins and closes the result, they press Clear below the Results list before passing the phone on. The wheel then shows only the names still to be drawn, with no record of earlier results.

What if the last person is left with only their own name?

Restart the whole draw by opening the share link you copied before the first spin, which restores every name. It is rare in bigger groups, and a quick redo is much fairer than swapping pairs by hand.

How many people can join a Secret Santa draw?

The wheel holds up to 200 names, far more than most groups need. With very large groups, a single organiser running the draw is quicker than passing one device around the room.
