What should I do when I’m bored?
Pick one small thing and start it straight away. Boredom tends to feed on itself: the longer you scroll through options, the less appealing each one sounds. A spin cuts that short. Whatever it lands on, commit to twenty minutes; if you still hate it after that, spin again. Most of the time you will want to carry on.
For a much longer menu, sorted into indoor, outdoor, creative, free and social ideas, browse our list of things to do when bored and add your favourites to the wheel.
Boredom busters for kids
School holidays and rainy weekends are when this wheel gets the most spins. Children accept a suggestion from a wheel far more readily than one from a parent, and the spin itself buys a moment of excitement. Edit the list to things your children can do with little help: build a den, a dance party, a jigsaw, drawing, a treasure hunt in the garden.
Give each child a spin in turn, or a “family spin” where everyone does the same activity. A drawing prompt wheel is handy when the result is “Draw something” and inspiration runs dry.
Things to do for adults at home
For grown-ups, a good boredom wheel mixes something useful, something creative and something social. Tidying one drawer, calling a friend and learning a card trick all take under half an hour and leave you feeling better than an evening of scrolling. If you want the wheel to nudge you towards movement, add a few slices from the workout wheel, such as “20 squats”.
How do I make my own boredom wheel?
Press Edit as text and type the things you actually enjoy but forget about, one per line. Twelve to twenty items is plenty. A few tips help it work:
- Keep items small. “Read a chapter” gets done; “Read a novel” does not.
- Remove what does not fit today. Delete the outdoor slices on a wet day before you spin.
- Separate screens. Leave screen-based options off the wheel if the point is to get away from them.
- Mix in chores. A slice like “Tidy one drawer” is surprisingly satisfying; the chore wheel handles the bigger jobs.
Can I stop the same idea coming up twice?
Yes. Tick Remove the winner after each spin in Settings. That turns a long holiday into a journey around the wheel: one new activity each day until every slice has had its turn. Your list is saved in the browser, and Reset to default brings the original twenty back.
Frequently asked questions
Are these activities suitable for kids?
Most are. Baking, planting seeds, a bike ride and trying a new recipe may need an adult nearby, depending on age. Edit the list to match what your children can do safely on their own.
Can I make separate indoor and outdoor wheels?
Yes. Edit the wheel down to indoor ideas, press Share or embed and bookmark the link, then do the same with outdoor ideas. Open whichever bookmark suits the weather.
What if the wheel picks something I don’t want to do?
Try it for twenty minutes first, because starting is often the hardest part. If you still do not want to, press Remove it and spin again so that idea leaves the wheel for today.
Does the wheel set a timer for the activity?
No, the wheel only chooses the activity. Use a kitchen timer or your phone if you want to time it, for example twenty minutes of reading before you decide whether to keep going.
Can I add screen-free ideas only?
Yes. Delete Watch a documentary and Make a playlist, then add screen-free ideas such as origami, a crossword or a card game. The wheel then only suggests activities away from screens.
