Random fruit wheel

Spin to pick a random fruit from 40, ranging from everyday apples and bananas to lychee, star fruit and dragon fruit. Families use it for a “new fruit this week” challenge, smoothie roulette and snack-time games that make children curious about what is in the fruit bowl.

Which fruits are on the wheel?

Forty fruits in three rough tiers. About half are supermarket staples most families already buy (apple, banana, orange, grapes, strawberry). A second group is seasonal or a little more special, like apricot, fig, pomegranate and cherry. The rest are the adventurous end: lychee, dragon fruit, star fruit, jackfruit, persimmon and guava, which many children have never tasted. Every fruit has the same size slice.

The try-a-new-fruit challenge

Once a week, a child spins and the family buys that fruit on the next shop. If it is one you already eat, try it a new way: frozen grapes, grilled peach, a squeeze of lime on mango. Turn on Remove the winner after each spin and keep using the same saved wheel, so over a school term you work through the list without repeats. The wheel remembers its state in your browser between visits.

If some fruits are hard to find where you live, delete them before you start using Edit as text. It is better to have 25 realistic slices than a wheel that keeps landing on jackfruit when your nearest shop has never stocked one.

Smoothie roulette

Spin twice for two fruits, blend them with yoghurt or milk, and rate the result out of ten. Some pairings are classics (banana and strawberry), some are surprise hits (mango and lime), and a few are memorable for the wrong reasons. Remove lemon, lime and cranberry if you want to keep it sweet for younger tasters, or keep them in for a sour-face round.

Healthy-eating games for kids

  • Fruit colour match. Spin a colour on the random color wheel, then name a fruit that matches before spinning this wheel to check.
  • Grow it or buy it? Spin a fruit and ask: does it grow on a tree, a bush, a vine or a plant on the ground?
  • Fruit spelling. Spin and spell the fruit aloud. Pomegranate and raspberry are good stretches; the spelling word wheel has more practice words.
  • Grocery hunt. At the shop, spin before you enter and the child has to find that fruit and read its country of origin from the label.

For planning the rest of the meal, the lunch wheel and the dessert wheel work the same way.

Is a tomato a fruit?

Botanically, yes, as are cucumbers and peppers, because they develop from a flower and contain seeds. We left them off because in the kitchen they are treated as vegetables. Avocado stayed on the list: it is a fruit (technically a large berry) that people often forget counts. Add tomato yourself if you want a trick question for the fruit quiz.

About this list

We chose the 40 fruits ourselves, using everyday culinary names: fruit that is usually eaten sweet or used in drinks and desserts. It is not a botanical classification, and which fruits are easy to buy varies a lot by country and season. Each spin gives every fruit an equal chance, as explained in how the wheel picks.

Frequently asked questions

How many fruits are on the wheel?

There are 40, from everyday apples and bananas to lychee, star fruit and jackfruit. You can add up to 200 slices, so type any local fruit into the box and press Enter.

How do I remove fruits I cannot buy locally?

Open Edit as text, delete the lines for fruits you cannot find, and close the editor. The wheel redraws with only the fruits you can actually get.

Can the wheel give us a different fruit every week?

Yes. Turn on Remove the winner after each spin and spin once a week. Each fruit drops off after it is picked, and the wheel is saved in your browser between visits.

Why are tomatoes not on the fruit wheel?

Tomatoes are botanically fruits, but in cooking they are treated as vegetables, so we left them out. Add tomato yourself if you want a trick question in a fruit quiz.
