Random month wheel

Spin to pick one of the 12 months, January to December. Use it to settle when to take a trip or hold a party, for birthday-month games, or for calendar practice with children. You can weight months by their number of days, or remove the ones that are already booked.

How do I pick a random month for a trip or event?

Delete the months that will not work first, then spin. Open Edit as text and remove anything ruled out by school terms, work deadlines or weather, and let the wheel choose between the rest. A family that can only travel in school holidays might keep April, July, August and December; a group planning a reunion might strike out the busy end of the year.

The trimmed wheel is also a good way to end a long group chat. Share the link, spin once while everyone is watching on a video call, and the date conversation is over. Once the month is fixed, the day of the week wheel can settle which day.

Birthday-month games

  • Birthday bingo. Spin a month; everyone born in it stands up and shares one thing about their birthday. Good for a new class or team.
  • Seasonal charades. Spin, then act out something that happens in that month where you live: pancakes, fireworks, back to school.
  • Party theme. Stuck on a theme? Spin a month and throw a party themed on it, such as a July picnic in the middle of winter.

For a bigger menu of group activities, the party games guide has rounds that work with any wheel on the site.

Calendar practice for children

Young learners can spin a month and then answer: which month comes before it, which comes after, how many days does it have, and which season is it? Keep the questions the same each time so the routine becomes familiar. The old rhyme “Thirty days hath September, April, June and November” is still the quickest way to remember the short months. For number work alongside it, try the number wheel from 1 to 10.

Can I weight months by how many days they have?

Yes, and it is a neat trick when you want a month in proportion to its length, for example to draw a random week of the year fairly. Turn on Use weights in Settings, then give the seven long months a weight of 31, the four 30-day months a weight of 30, and February 28. Each month then wins in proportion to its days. Without weights, each month has a flat one-in-twelve chance, as explained in is a spin wheel really random?

These are meteorological seasons, the three-month blocks used by weather services. Astronomical seasons start around the equinoxes and solstices instead, about three weeks later.

About this list

The wheel uses the 12 months of the Gregorian calendar in their usual English spelling. January, March, May, July, August, October and December have 31 days; April, June, September and November have 30; February has 28, or 29 in a leap year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick a random month without the ones I cannot do?

Open Edit as text, delete the months that do not work, and close the editor. The wheel redraws with only the remaining months, each with an equal chance.

Can I make longer months more likely?

Yes. Turn on Use weights in Settings and set each month’s weight to its number of days: 31, 30 or 28. A 31-day month then wins slightly more often than February, in exact proportion.

Is this good for teaching the months to kids?

Yes. Spin a month and ask which months come before and after it, how many days it has and what season it is. Full screen mode makes it easy to see on a classroom board.

Can I pick a random date, not just a month?

Spin this wheel for the month, then use the random number generator with a range of 1 to 28, 30 or 31 for the day. Two quick steps give you a random date.
